Jerry Gilligan > Winter Scene Yosemite National Park

Light snow fell in Yosemite Valley the prior two nights. It has been over a month since the last snow storm so I was looking forward to getting back up to the mountains.

I drove up early Saturday morning pre-visualizing a winter scene. I drove around the valley surveying the meadows looking for the right composition. There were a lot of bare spots throughout the park which made my goal more challenging.

The soft morning light back-lit these trees against Cathedral Rock which made for a nice capture.

Mammoth Peak is on the right which is part of the Kuna Crest. This was a gorgeous morning in the high country... The Tioga lake is in the forground and was still 90% frozen.

I was hoping for a few clouds to bring interest to the sky but this was what it looked like on June 26,2011 at 8:36 am.
Jerry Gilligan > Clearing Storm Over Half Dome and the Merced River

I came to Yosemite just after a week of storms came over the Sierra Nevada.

For the next several days Yosemite was amazing...

This is one of many moments that I captured during my visit back in December of 2009.

I waited for a while watching the clouds shroud Half Dome and at times they lifted to reveal the Monolith in all it's glory.

This location is a favorite of mine when I come to Yosemite, and it never disappoints...

I will come here and just take in all of the magic and majesty of Yosemite.

During the winter season you can find solitude in different parts of the park!
Jerry Gilligan > Half Dome from Sentinel Bridge after a prevoius night snow storm.

Fresh snow in Yosemite Valley usually melts soon after it falls so I try to work the valley for it's many compositions...

Here is a typical image from a famous location...Sentinel bridge is a great place to get Half Dome and potential reflections in the Merced River.

It was hard to pass this up as the afternoon light enhances the scene with fresh snow...
Jerry Gilligan > The storm clouds closed in around Half Dome and it started to snow.

A large glow from above created some unique lighting conditions through the storm clouds, bathing the Elm tree in soft light, while the surrounding trees were in shadow.

I was fortunate to be set up observing the scene develop and capture the moment while it unfolded before me...

Jerry Gilligan > First Light in Cooks Meadow side lights the famous Elm Tree.

This is the last remaining Elm Tree in Cooks Meadow. These tree's were brought here in the late 1800's.

James Mason Hutchings planted several orchards in Yosemite mostly containing apple trees but some cherry trees can be found. Hutchings also planted a row of American elms along the route of the present road that crosses the meadow north of the present Sentinel Bridge.
These were grown from seed supplied by Rev. Joseph Worcester of Waltham, Massachusetts.

Jerry Gilligan > Clearing Storm at Tunnel View with a Double Rainbow.

This was a special day in Yosemite...It rained most of the day and I hoped that it might clear up by sunset. Tunnel view is ideal for late sun and if the clouds opened up we might get some great light. I set up my camera with an umbrella attached to my tripod. I was ready for nature to put on her show and she did not disappoint... As the sun rays came out the rainbow started to gradually form and only lasted for a few moments and then went away...It came back again for an oncore and radiated for over 5 minutes. I was able to capture a few images and then stood there in awe taking in another special moment at Yosemite !
